Shopping
In the last two years Leicester has undergone a transformation, becoming a top
city for shopping, eating out, exploring and relaxing.
Highcross is a brand new shopping centre and has just opened to make Leicester in the
top 10 shopping destinations in the UK. As well as hundreds of new stores and a flagship John Lewis store, there are
new cafe's and restaurants and squares to relax in after a long day shopping.
St Martin's Square and leicester Lanes are also great for shopping, this charming, cosmopolitan area of the city centre
is a must for all visitors. With its small lanes surrounding the hub of St. Martin’s
Square itself, it is home to an intriguing variety of independent fashion, interior
and gift shops.
The Belgrave Road is also a colourful shopping experience and attracts visitors
from around the world who come to the area to visit the large array of colorful
saree emporiums, expensive jewellery stores and spice stores selling herbs and
spices from around the world.
Eating out
Belgrave Road (AKA ‘The Golden Mile’) - This is the place to experience Asian cuisine at its best, with a good choice
of meat and vegetarian restaurants.
Culture
The Curve opened December 2008 and is a
state of the art theatre and performance space, designed by world renowned architect
Rafael Viñoly. It is based in the heart of the new Cultural Quarter on Rutland Street.
City history
Jewry Wall museum - Leicester is well known as an important Roman settlement, and evidence of this
can be seen at the Jewry Wall Museum where there are 2000 year old remains of
Roman baths. Take a guided walk around Castle Park, Leicester’s old town, and
see the medieval Guildhall, and the Great Hall of Leicester Castle.
