To mark the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games,
East Midlands Tourism has joined forces with ten current and aspiring Olympians
and Paralympians.
This unique set of contemporary images showcases the athletes, many of whom live
and train in the East Midlands, taking part in their chosen sport at leading tourist
attractions in the region.
Visit these great landmarks and experience what the East Midlands has to offer.

Artistic gymnast, Becky Downie, 2009 British senior champion and 12th at the
Olympic Games in Beijing, the highest overall Olympic placing for a British gymnast
in her first year as a senior at only 16 years old, at the Foxton Locks’ famous
staircase of 10 locks in Leicestershire, a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.

Rod Wellington (centre of shot), who has represented England at junior and senior
levels and Jordache Akpoveta (jumper) and Jake Smith (left of shot) who have played
for their county and region at under 17 level and currently play for Lynx Basketball
Club in Lincoln, underneath the Dean’s Eye window at Lincoln Cathedral, one of
the finest gothic buildings in Europe.

Daniel Greaves, Paralympic Champion in the F44 discus, double World and European
champion and current World record holder, on the shores of Europe’s largest man
made reservoir, Rutland Water in Rutland, a haven for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts.

Catriona Sibert and Samuel Brightman, up and coming fencers who have represented
Great Britain at U17 and U20 age group championships, at Stanage Edge in Derbyshire,
one of the longest gritstone escarpments in the UK. This haven for climbers offers
impressive views of the Hope Valley below and has even become a favourite with
movie makers.

Andy Turner, medallist in the 110 metres hurdles in both the European and Commonwealth
Games, in the Long Gallery at Rockingham Castle in Northamptonshire, a unique
piece of living history, originally built for William the Conqueror and a family
home for over 450 years.

David Florence, Beijing Olympic silver medallist in the C1 single slalom on the
Cascade at Chatsworth, one of Britain’s most acclaimed stately homes in the heart
of the Peak District.
Sam Oldham, current under 16 British gymnastic champion, gold medallist at the
2008 European Junior Gymnastic Championships and 2009 Australian Youth Olympics
and double gold medallist at the 2009 European Youth Olympics, at the 800 year
old Major Oak in Sherwood Forest Nottinghamshire, favoured haunt of the famous
Robin Hood.
